Jimmy Johnstone Celtic Legend – Premium Retro Football Print
Celebrate the Lion-Hearted Genius
Some players are remembered for the trophies they won.
Some are remembered for the goals they scored.
A very rare few are remembered for the way they made people feel.
Jimmy Johnstone was one of those players.
To generations of Celtic supporters, he was more than a winger. More than a European Cup winner. More than a Lisbon Lion.
He was excitement.
He was courage.
He was the player who could bring an entire stadium to its feet with a single touch of the ball.
Small in stature but immense in character, Jimmy possessed a rare combination of fearless bravery and extraordinary talent. Defenders knew exactly what he intended to do. He was going to run at them. He was going to take them on. He was going to challenge them again and again until one of them gave way.
They also knew the only way to stop him was often to foul him.
Jimmy knew it too.
The remarkable thing was that it never stopped him.
He would get up, demand the ball again and attack the same defender once more.
That courage became part of his legend.
This premium retro football print celebrates the skill, fearlessness and unforgettable moments that helped Jimmy Johnstone become not only one of Celtic’s greatest players, but the player many supporters still regard as the greatest of them all.
The Story Behind This Print
Long before Celtic conquered Europe, long before Lisbon and long before the songs and stories that would immortalise his name, Jimmy Johnstone was a young boy growing up in Viewpark dreaming of playing football.
Nobody looking at the slight youngster would have predicted what was to come.
He was not physically imposing.
He was not intimidating.
He was not built like the giants he would later face.
What he possessed instead was something far more dangerous.
Fearlessness.
Jimmy played football with a freedom that seemed to belong to another age. He wanted the ball when others hid from it. He wanted responsibility when others avoided it. Most of all, he wanted to take on defenders no matter how many times they kicked him, dragged him down or tried to stop him.
Supporters quickly fell in love with him.
Not simply because he was brilliant.
Because he was brave.
Every time Jimmy received possession, something felt possible.
As Celtic rose under Jock Stein and assembled the side that would become known forever as the Lisbon Lions, Jimmy became one of its most electrifying figures. Alongside Billy McNeill, Bertie Auld, Bobby Murdoch, Tommy Gemmell and the rest of that extraordinary team, he helped transform Celtic into one of the most admired sides in world football.
Then came Lisbon.
The European Cup Final of 1967 remains one of the defining moments in British football history. Celtic became the first British club to lift the European Cup and Jimmy’s contribution throughout that era secured his place among football’s elite.
Yet one of the stories that perhaps best captures his brilliance took place after Celtic had conquered Europe.
When Celtic travelled to Madrid for Alfredo Di Stéfano’s testimonial match, they faced one of the most famous clubs in football history - Real Madrid - in front of a crowd accustomed to seeing the world’s greatest players.
Jimmy stole the show.
The tiny winger from Viewpark dazzled one of football’s grandest stages and left supporters astonished by what they were witnessing.
Years later, Jimmy Johnstone would be voted Celtic’s greatest ever player.
Considering the names that have worn the famous green and white hoops, that honour says everything.
But statistics, medals and accolades only explain part of the story.
What supporters remember most is the feeling.
The anticipation every time he received the ball.
The belief that something extraordinary might be about to happen.
That is why Jimmy Johnstone remains such a towering figure in Celtic history.
And that is why his story continues to be passed from one generation of supporters to the next.
From The Designer
I never had the privilege of watching Jimmy Johnstone play in person.
Like many supporters of my generation, I first came to know Jimmy through stories.
Stories told by my dad.
Stories told by my uncles.
Stories spoken about with such admiration that Jimmy almost felt larger than life.
Growing up, I heard the same themes repeated again and again. How brave he was. How defenders could not handle him. How he would get kicked all over the pitch and simply get up and demand the ball again.
Part of me wondered whether those stories had grown over time.
Then I watched the footage.
And realised they had not.
Jimmy really was that good.
What struck me most was not simply the skill. It was the courage. Here was a player giving away size and strength to almost every defender he faced, yet he never stopped attacking.
That combination of genius and bravery is incredibly rare.
For me, Jimmy was not simply a great Celtic player.
He represented something deeper about the club itself.
Courage.
Expression.
Fearlessness.
The willingness to take risks and play football the right way.
That is why he earned his place in the Graficona collection.
And that is why he deserves to be remembered.
Jimmy Johnstone’s Celtic Legacy
Celtic supporters have witnessed some of the greatest players in football history wear the famous green and white hoops.
Billy McNeill lifted the European Cup. Kenny Dalglish became one of the finest forwards of his generation. Paul McStay carried the club through difficult years with extraordinary dignity and talent. Henrik Larsson gave supporters memories that will never fade.
Yet when Celtic supporters were asked to choose the greatest player ever to represent their club, the name they selected was Jimmy Johnstone. Wee 'Jinky'.
That honour alone tells you almost everything you need to know.
Few clubs in world football possess a history as rich as Celtic’s. Across more than a century, thousands of players have worn the jersey. Hundreds have won trophies. Dozens have become legends.
Only one became Jinky.
The reason supporters continue to speak about Jimmy with such affection is not simply because he won medals. It is because he represented everything they wanted a Celtic player to be.
Jimmy played football with a freedom that felt almost rebellious. While others looked for the safe option, he looked for the daring one. While others protected possession, he attacked defenders.
His achievements were remarkable. Nine league titles, seven Scottish Cups, six Scottish League Cups and a European Cup winner’s medal secured his place among the most decorated players in Celtic history.
But statistics only tell part of the story.
Jimmy Johnstone’s true legacy lives in the memories he created.
The stories still told.
The footage still watched.
The generations of supporters who never saw him play, yet feel as though they know him because his name continues to be spoken about with such admiration.
Many players become part of a club’s history.
Jimmy Johnstone became part of Celtic’s identity.
Jimmy was made for Celtic. And Celtic was made for Jimmy.

Part of Celtic’s Rich Football Heritage
Jimmy Johnstone’s story is inseparable from one of the most celebrated teams football has ever produced.
Under Jock Stein, Celtic assembled a side built not only on talent, but on courage, belief and attacking football. Alongside Billy McNeill, Bertie Auld, Bobby Murdoch, Tommy Gemmell, Bobby Lennox, Stevie Chalmers, Willie Wallace, John Clark, Jim Craig and Ronnie Simpson, Jimmy helped create a legacy that continues to define what Celtic Football Club represents.
Together they became known as the Lisbon Lions, the first British team to lift the European Cup.
Every member of that team contributed something special.
Yet few players embodied Jock Stein’s vision of football more completely than Jimmy Johnstone.
After Celtic’s victory in Lisbon, Stein famously said:
“We did it by playing football. Pure, beautiful, inventive football. There was not a negative thought in our heads.”
Those words perfectly captured the spirit of the Lisbon Lions and the style of football that made Jimmy such a beloved figure. Courageous, expressive and relentlessly attacking, he played the game exactly as Stein believed it should be played.
His place within that side explains why supporters continue to regard him so highly.
His story also demonstrates how football heritage survives.
Supporters who watched Jimmy play passed those memories to their children and grandchildren. Stories became traditions. Traditions became part of the club’s identity.
That is why Jimmy Johnstone remains such an important figure in Celtic history.
Because his story still helps define what Celtic means today.

Why Graficona Exists
Graficona was created to celebrate and preserve football heritage through original design.
Every player featured in the collection meant something to somebody.
They were somebody’s hero.
Somebody’s greatest football memory.
Somebody’s reason for falling in love with football.
Jimmy Johnstone perfectly embodies that philosophy.
Many younger supporters never had the opportunity to watch him play, yet his story continues to be passed down from one generation to the next through memories, conversations and shared experiences.
That is why preserving football heritage matters.
The moments, players and stories that shaped the game deserve to be remembered.
Because your hero may not be my hero.
But every hero deserves to be remembered.
The inspiration for Graficona came from the stories that were passed down to me by my dad, uncles and family members. Long before I saw footage of players like Jimmy Johnstone, Billy McNeill and Charlie Tully, I knew their names through the passion and excitement with which those stories were told.
If you’d like to learn more about the journey that led to Graficona and the memories that inspired the collection, you can read Our Story.
