Bertie Auld Celtic Legend – Premium Retro Football Print
Celebrate One of Celtic’s Most Beloved Lisbon Lions
Some footballers win trophies. Some become club legends. Very few become part of the fabric of a football club itself. Bertie Auld became part of Celtic.
Long before I ever watched footage of him. Long before I understood how important the Lisbon Lions were to Celtic’s story. Long before I knew anything about appearances, goals or honours, I knew Bertie Auld’s name.
I knew it because my dad spoke about him regularly. And whenever Bertie’s name appeared in conversation, the stories followed.
The football. The singing. The laughter. The mischief. The confidence. The personality.
My dad always described Bertie as “gallus”. A wonderful Glasgow word that doesn’t really translate perfectly. Confident. Cheeky. Bold. Full of swagger. The kind of person who walked into a room and immediately made his presence felt. The kind of player who demanded the ball when others hid from it. The kind of character supporters never forgot.
This premium retro football print celebrates one of Celtic’s greatest ever personalities, a Lisbon Lion whose influence extended far beyond his football ability.
The Story Behind This Print
Born in Maryhill in 1938, Bertie Auld would become one of the most recognisable figures in Celtic history. A gifted midfielder blessed with intelligence, vision and technical ability, he played a crucial role in one of the greatest periods the club has ever known.
My dad often spoke about Bertie and Bobby Murdoch together. He rarely mentioned one without the other. In his eyes they were the engine room of the Lisbon Lions. When Bertie and Bobby played well, Celtic played well.
While the forwards often received the headlines, my dad believed those two controlled matches from the middle of the park. They dictated the tempo, created opportunities and made Celtic tick.
Bertie possessed all the qualities supporters admire in a footballer. Skill. Determination. Courage. Creativity. But what truly set him apart was his personality. He played football with freedom and confidence. He entertained. And perhaps that is why supporters still speak about him with such affection today.
From The Designer
My connection to Bertie Auld comes primarily through stories. Stories told by my dad. Stories told by family members. Stories that somehow made players from previous generations feel vividly alive.
One connection always fascinated me. Bertie grew up in Maryhill and was best pals with my uncle when they were young. Long before Lisbon, long before the trophies and long before Celtic supporters across the world knew his name, he was simply Bertie from up the road.
Bertie wasn’t born a Celtic supporter. But he certainly became one. And remained one until the very end.
The memory that stays with me most happened at Hampden Park in November 2016 during the Scottish League Cup Final between Celtic and Aberdeen. The game was still in progress. Yet there was Bertie in one of the hospitality areas, singing, dancing and banging on the windows as though he were a supporter half his age. While everyone else was watching the match unfold, I found myself watching Bertie. He looked exactly how supporters imagined Bertie Auld should look. Full of life. Full of energy. Still living and breathing Celtic.
It was impossible not to smile watching him.
That was Bertie.
And perhaps that is why so many supporters loved him. Not simply because of what he achieved. But because of who he was.
The Tunnel In Lisbon
There is one Bertie Auld story that stands above all the others.
It happened before a ball had even been kicked in the 1967 European Cup Final.
Standing in the tunnel before facing Inter Milan, the Celtic players looked across at one of the most feared teams in world football.
Inter looked immaculate. Powerful. Confident. As Bertie later described it, they looked like film stars.
Meanwhile Celtic were a group of pale Glaswegians preparing for the biggest match of their lives.
It would have been easy for nerves to creep in. Easy for doubts to appear. Easy for Celtic to feel inferior.
Then Bertie started singing.
Not quietly. Not nervously.
He belted out The Celtic Song.
One by one his team-mates joined in. The tunnel filled with noise. The tension disappeared. The confidence grew.
Years later Billy McNeill recalled how that moment transformed the atmosphere. By the time Celtic walked out onto the pitch they no longer felt intimidated.
They felt ready.
No Celtic supporter can ever know what might have happened had Bertie not started singing that day. Perhaps Celtic would still have won. Perhaps they wouldn’t.
But what we do know is that one of the defining moments in Celtic history began with Bertie Auld lifting the spirits of those around him.
It was far more than a song.
It was belief.
And belief carried Celtic all the way to becoming Champions of Europe.
Bertie Auld’s Celtic Legacy
Few players embody the spirit of Celtic Football Club quite like Bertie Auld.
As a Lisbon Lion, he helped deliver the greatest achievement in the club’s history. But his legacy stretches far beyond a single match or a single trophy.
Bertie represented everything supporters love about football. Passion. Personality. Humour. Belief. Connection.
He understood that football should entertain. He understood that football should bring people together. And he understood that supporters deserved players who embraced the responsibility of wearing the jersey.
Whenever Bertie repeated Jock Stein’s famous instruction to the players, he did so with obvious pride:
“You have the ability, otherwise you wouldn’t be playing at Celtic Park, you wouldn’t be pulling on that jersey, so go and entertain those supporters who’ve paid good money to see you.”
No player embodied that philosophy more completely.

Bertie Auld perfectly represents what Graficona is all about.
A player whose legacy extends beyond statistics. A player whose stories continue to be shared. A player whose personality remains every bit as memorable as his football achievements.
