Apoyar el fútbol no es sólo un hobby, es una identidad

My Roots in Football

I’m Vincent, a lifelong football fan and graphic designer. I grew up in a family where from an early age football was woven into our weekends: match-day outings with my dad, uncles and cousins, the thrill of standing shoulder to shoulder on the terraces and that shared sense of belonging. Waiting outside the pub before the match with a can of Coke and a packet of Tudor pickled onion crisps (it was the 1970s, after all!), they’d argue passionately over line-ups and predictions while I listened, soaking it all in—in awe as we made our way to our usual spot on the terraces. They’d regale me with tales of the great players of the past: heroic goals scored against impossible odds, near-superhuman feats that seemed to cast today’s stars in shadow, each story more vibrant than the last. I’d drink in every word, carried along by their excitement and convinced those legends were truly in a league of their own - even though I’d never seen them play!

I also vividly recall watching in awe the 1978 World Cup with my dad on our old TV: the sights, sounds and colours of Argentina’s matches—especially the ticker-tape displays that felt otherworldly - leapt from the screen. The South American flair and sheer passion seemed to pulse through the TV, and I could see my dad’s delight in my wide-eyed wonder. It was the only World Cup we shared, and its magic has stayed with me ever since.

I still remember getting my first scarf—now tucked away safely in the loft alongside my dad’s—a rite of passage for every young fan. One night, at my first midweek European tie on a dark, cold winter’s evening, the floodlights loomed overhead like steel sentinels, lighting up the sky like something out of War of the Worlds. Inside, the official attendance might have read 67,000, but we all knew it felt closer to 80,000—so packed you couldn’t move or even slip your hands into your pockets. The crowd surged and swayed, shouting and singing; the atmosphere electric, the air thick with noise, anticipation and the unmistakable smell of alcohol. Exiting the stadium, pressed so tightly in the mass that my feet barely touched the ground, I felt the sheer power of those collective moments.

Hearing that first roar when a goal went in was something else entirely—like the roof lifting off the stadium and my eardrums under physical pressure. I’d never experienced anything like it before or since. Football isn’t just a game; it’s identity, connection, nostalgia and family—the soundtrack to our lives, stitched together by memories and iconic moments that are both precious and fragile.

Those passions and memories revealed how powerful football moments can be—how they connect us to the people and places we cherish. Although I didn’t know it at the time, that inspiration would lead me to create Graficona one day: a small business dedicated to capturing unforgettable football moments in art and design.

Becoming a Designer

Upon leaving design college in the late 1980s, I embarked on a 35-year career in graphic design, honing my skills across diverse projects—from branding and print campaigns to digital experiences. Over the decades, I mastered typography, composition, colour theory and visual storytelling—expertise that now informs every Graficona poster.

Finding Purpose During Lockdown

When the COVID lockdowns arrived, my world shifted: for the first time in my career, consultancy work dried up and I had space to reflect on what truly mattered. I realised I’d grown restless with routine client briefs and yearned for something personal and fulfilling. Endless Teams calls revealed blank, uninspiring walls everywhere, sparking a creative itch: I needed a project to keep my skills sharp and ignite my creative passion. Poster design - an art form I’d always loved for its nostalgia - seemed perfect. Football itself was on pause - stadiums silent and fans absent - which underscored how “football without fans is nothing.” In that moment, my design expertise and lifelong love of the beautiful game converged, and Graficona was born, although I didn’t know it at the time.

Designing with Purpose

At its core, Graficona began as a lifeline for my motivation and mental wellbeing during an unprecedented lull in my career—I’d never been idle before, so I treated this personal project with the same rigor as a high-priority client assignment. Even though it started purely for personal pleasure and to keep me motivated, I approached it with the meticulous attention of a professional brief: researching the marketplace to see what existed and what was missing. I rejected mass-produced, clichéd posters in favour of designs rooted in authenticity, storytelling and craftsmanship. A clear process took shape: each design began with deep research into match highlights, player careers and club heritage. I distilled those stories into clean, impactful compositions—balanced layouts, thoughtful typography and a restrained colour palette that evoked nostalgia without feeling juvenile.

Honouring Legends in Art

Finding the right pose and translating it into an illustration drew on my fascination with the Ultra fan culture in Italian football, especially their tifos and murals. I began with my personal heroes - Pelé, Maradona and Cruyff - and early feedback confirmed the resonance: friends and family felt transported back to matches past, sparking conversations and excitement. That momentum carried on as I paid tribute to BeckenbauerMüller and Kempes, then RivellinoSócrates and Zico - and so on. I couldn’t stop, Rossi, Tardelli, Baresi, Maldini, Puskás, Platini, Tigana and Djorkaeff followed. The momentum was building as I moved on to Gullit, van Basten, Zidane, Laudrup, Sánchez, Eusebio, Figo, Hagi, Di Stéfano, Enrique, Larsson and Ibrahimović. Each new design reinforced the belief that merging design craft with football passion could create art that stands apart. That foundation still guides Graficona: today, every new design continues to draw on those same inspirations and research methods.

Turning Passion into Graficona

That initial spark became Graficona: the name combines “Graphic” with “Icona” (Italian for icon), symbolising our mission to craft premium, minimalist football art that honours the legends and moments fans hold dear. It was then I decided to follow my dream and turn this passion into a small business.

Windows into the Past

Our prints are more than mere decoration - they’re windows into the past. Whenever I gaze at my posters of Mario Kempes, Daniel Passarella, Teófilo Cubillas, Rob Rensenbrink or Roberto Bettega, a smile warms my face and memories flood back of my Dad waxing lyrical about their near-mythic skills and virtues at that 1978 World Cup, the vivid tales almost bringing a lump to my throat. They’re a thousand memories, reminders of who we were, who we stood beside and what those moments meant. Because football is family, and memories matter. Since our official launch, the catalogue has grown from that initial dozen or so posters to over 3,500 and counting, covering clubs, players and historic matches from around the world. Each one meaning something special to someone. It’s, to our knowledge, the largest collection of football poster designs out there. Behind every new design lies the same dedication: deep research, creative exploration and an insistence on print quality. With decades of print-production experience behind me, I know which paper, inks and methods deliver crisp detail and enduring results—so each poster arrives pristine and ready to stand the test of time.

Connecting Memories through Design

I remain convinced that a poster can reconnect someone with a cherished memory—whether it’s a match watched with loved ones, a player whose style inspired admiration, or an era that shaped a fan’s identity. For me, a Kempes or Passarella poster does more than adorn a wall—it revives my Dad’s voice describing their brilliance, stirring that same awe and emotion all over again. Graficona exists to bridge professional design expertise and football nostalgia in a way that feels personal and enduring, while steering clear of mass-produced, clichéd posters that don’t resonate with discerning fans.
